The power of the internet compels you

Dear Internets,

I need help. I’m pretty sure what I’m trying to do is easy-peasy if you know how. I do not know how.

Here’s the sitch:

1) Our church has a good sound system, done in the last 5 years, connecting the microphone and speakers
2) I want to connect a device to that sound system to record the sermons
3) I suspect my 120 gig iPod would do the trick nicely
4) I don’t know how to hook the iPod up to the system

Am I right? If I have a cable/doohickey can I just plug my iPod into some sort of “line out”, press play at the beginning of the service, and then download audio off the iPod when I get home? Advice, please!

    1. The part where I keep tying myself up is that I don’t want a microphone. We have a microphone that works well. I want to basically hook my iPod up to an existing sound system to record what that sound system is playing (which is the sound from the microphone). I almost just don’t know how to phrase the question to find an answer — I can’t be the only one who’s ever tried this!

  2. Not all iPod models can, but newer ones can with an accessory… But generally a microphone that plugs into the iPod dock connector. Widgets that connect iPods directly to sound equipment (to record) exist, but they are few and far between. Stuff like this: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=460128

    That’s somewhat pricey. For that price, you could almost get a Mac mini from E-bay. You could have it wake up for service, record the service, FTP the recording somewhere, and power-down fully automatedly (and keep it locked in the audio cabinet). Actually, there’s nothing mystical about the Mac Mini, its just really simple to do that sort of thing. Any one of those low-power micro-PCs you can find out there would work.

    That said, there’s probably wireless digital audio recorders out there that would work too… but I bet that they are equally as expensive…

    1. I actually ended up calling the Apple support line to be told that’s just not what the iPod does. Once I gave up on “economically” using what I already have, I found some dedicated purpose voice recorders that look like they might work, although if you want to do the setup for the Mac Mini, I’ll be tempted.

      BTW – can you send me the wireless connection information for the church wireless?
